When Katy Perry said her new album was going in a darker direction, I was intrigued to see what she would bring to the table. This new style was understandable, given she was having a bit of a rough time after breaking up with Russell Brand, but it seems she's managed to cross the bridge, and come out the other side feeling much better. It's no surprise that Perry has gone on to feature both sides of her story for her latest effort, exploring the highs and lows of the past couple of years, both lyrically and sonically.
'Prism' takes her previous two albums and drags them through the 'popular-in-2013' trends, whilst still keeping that signature Katy Perry sound. Yes, there aren't really any big pop moments compared to 'Teenage Dream,' or as uptempo, but it's far more personal as a collection, and it's a pleasant surprise to see Katy push herself as an artist.
