Movie Week

26 January 2014

One of my resolutions for this year was to watch more films. I barely watch any, mainly because I don't always have the patience, I get a little claustrophobic in cinemas, and nothing really seems to appeal to me apart from kids' films and comedies. With this in mind, I thought I'd challenge myself to watch a film every day this week. I took some of my birthday money and rummaged through the bargains in CEX, and rented a couple of films on iTunes, and I'm quite proud to say... I watched 6 and a half films over 7 days.

Ooops...

The only film I did not watch fully was 'Happy Endings,' starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel. I just found it boring, and a bit hard to get into, and had to stop after about half an hour, but the rest were pretty damn good - I'm in no place to really review films, but here's a quick note on each one...

We're The Millers - 9/10

I've seen so many gifs of it on Tumblr, and it looked hilarious, so I thought I'd kick the week off with 'We're The Millers.' It did not disappoint - it was pretty funny, the pacing was good, and the cherry on top was the fact that the guy who plays Ron Swanson in Parks and Rec, was in it. Amazing.

Bachelorette - 6.5/10

I loved 'Bridesmaids,' and I love Rebel Wilson, so 'Bachelorette' seemed like the perfect fit - alas it was not perfect. I still liked it, but it seemed to be really inconsistent, and you had to really search for the funny moments. It also took me a while to realise that the dark-haired chica was from Mean Girls...

Ted - 8.5/10

I'd wanted to watch 'Ted' since it came out, but in all honesty, I just kept forgetting about it. It was pretty funny, the storyline was a nice twist on the generic 'couple having to sacrifice to be happy' arc, but the villains (one was Phoebe's brother from Friends, which was kind of cool) weren't as funny, and didn't play as big of a role as I'd hoped. It was a very good watch, though.

Identity Thief - 8/10

I didn't really know what to expect from this, so I went into it without any expectations. 'Identity Thief' is hilarious in parts, and the storyline was a great idea.

Love Actually - 8/10

I literally had no idea what this film was going to be about, obviously love, but from the clips in Girls Aloud's 'Jump' video to other random gifs and quotes, there was no way I could really piece it together. I liked the fact there were a few different storylines going on, there was some pretty funny moments, and a load of familiar faces - a load.

Friends With Benefits - 8.5/10

My first impression, after about 20 minutes or so, was that the film was going to be a lot cruder than I'd imagined, but it was only the one sex scene that made me glad I wasn't watching this with my parents. The film really made me care about the two main characters, so much so that when they hit a few troubles, I was genuinely quite angry/sad. It's a great watch, with a couple of great side stories, and a nice way to finish the week.
